More than enough hints, thanks! None other than Simon Crum! Or Terry Preston. Ferlin Huskey, one of the first stars out of the Bakersfield country scene. What was the first record with the President's name? (that's what threw me, Ferlin was one of the artists I checked). Next question: Who did Merle Haggard replace as bassist in Wynn Stewart's band? (hint- he co-wrote Apartment #9, and had a great recording on it before Tammy).

I'll make a guess and say Ferlin Huskey. This is based on the hint about the duet with Jeanne Shepard, Dear John.

johnnyger,
You beat me to the Ferlin Huskey question. I know that Johnny Paycheck was a writer and released Apartment #9. (It's also one of the songs I get to do most of the lead work on with my steel guitar.)
Next question: What country star and Grand Ole Opry member was also a race car driver?

Paycheck is not the answer to my question. It was the other co-writer of the song. Paycheck also had a great cut on it. The answer to your question is Marty Robbins, "The Twentieth Century Drifter!" Now, back to work, you need to figure out my question (who did Merle sub for on bass in Wynn Stewart's Las Vegas band? - which also included Ralph Mooney and Roy Nichols!!!!).

I know the other writer is Bobby Austin and as Johnny told it Bobby graciously gave him the co-wrote just for giving him the 'idea' for the song....sadly we've lost both of them....
Am I right?

Yes, you are correct! I didn't know that Bobby was dead. I have his Capitol album, and it's excellent (including a song Hag wrote and never recorded called "I'm not looking for an angel". It features Ralph Mooney on steel, and is hard-core Bakersfield country, all the way! Next question to you, my friend.

Yeah -- Bobby's been gone for a couple of years now - www.talentondisplay.com/BobbyAustin.html I've heard that his album is awesome - you're very fortunate to have it in your collection! My turn huh?? Let me think and I'll get back later today to post one.... Anyone else love that old Fandango show on TNN with Bill Anderson
