The local radio station is advertising two upcoming concerts here in Arkansas for March. Merle Haggard will be in Malverne and George Strait will be in Little Rock. Tickets for Merle are $50.00 and tickets for George are $49.00 and $59.00.
I got to thinking about the price of going to either of these concerts and came up with the following:
Two tickets (Got to take the wife if I want to continue living)- $100.00 Dinner for two (Got to be a nice one)- $50.00 T-shirts, CD's, drinks and snacks at the concert, etc.-$50.00-$60.00 Total cost: $200.00+
Call me cheap or whatever but I'm just a poor working stiff. Merle, George, sorry but I can't afford you, your just too exspensive for me.
What you folks think of tickets prices for concerts?

I paid $148 for three tickets to see Hag last week. My 8 year old daughter got to see him, and we may never get another chance. Well worth it. (Skip the dinner and t-shirts!). I agree that the prices are high, but I hadn't seen a concert in years (and don't have anyone else, except Dale Watson, that I want to see).

Well Dale's tickets are a steal at those prices --- I don't know --- if it was me I'd pay $50 for Merle because I haven't seen him live and he's a legend --- George Strait I've seen a few times -- he was good but the fans are VERY annoying....I think I'd prefer the Dale Watson package deal -- and Dale gets bonus points for mingling with the crowd and signing CDs.... I think I read somewhere Merle gets $150,000 a show or thereabouts -- George Strait gets $650,000 for singing for 2 and 1/2 hrs --- sorry but I don't care how many #1's George has had --- almost 3/4 of a million for singing and grinning for a couple of hours is too much -- no wonder the high ticket prices --- Tickets around here for 'known names' are about $35 -- it's still a hefty price and shows usually end up not selling out because of it...

Another aspect on ticket prices is the venue. I wouldn't pay the prices y'all quote for a Strait show in a big venue, like a basketball arena. However, paying $50 to see Haggard in a club setting (Birchmere in Northern Virginia) was worth every nickel. I refused to pay $50-70 for Dixie Chicks at MCI Center, but eagerly paid $35 to see Willie at Wolf Trap. Simply put, country just doesn't work too well in an arena. But put the right person/group in the right venue, and you get a night of priceless memories.

Yup -- you're so right Raider -- venue does make a huge difference -- never understood why someone would pay $50 for an arena seat to sit in the back row and use binoculars just to see the jumbo-trons...

You pay insane prices for the nosebleed sections to see the show, not to hear the music. I've paid it for the likes of Springsteen and the Stones, and that's what I got-- good shows, but off balance bass-heavy music.

I believe it was only $40 a seat to see Merle here (so $80 for the two of us), and that was for front-row seats that practically put us on the stage. Very much worth the cost. Got to shake hands with Norm Stephens, even. On the other hand, we've paid as much as $75 apiece for Dwight Yoakam, and I haven't grudged a penny for any of those shows (although the time he was playing with Willie the crowd got to me -- I definitely prefer smaller venues). Dale Watson, on the third hand, I've seen for a $10 cover. He definitely is worth a whole lot more.

Sorry to hear the stations are holding you up just see a show. They will keep charging if you keep paying.
Here in Mo I paid 20 per ticket for the Connie Smith Show.
That is the set price for all adult ticket prices.

Well, for the first time in several years, I'm going to have to give Merle Haggard a miss, because the venue is charging $60 for good seats. I just can't afford that right now. Besides, the theatre he's going to didn't advertise in advance like the old one did last year, so I didn't find out about it until this week -- a mere two weeks before the show.

There are two venues within 60 miles of the Orlando Florida area that bring in traditional country acts for $20.00 or less a pop. I've seen (among others) Billy Yates, Jean Shepard, Connie Smith, Hank Thompson, Johnny Bush, David Frizzell, Tommy Cash, Jack Greene, Johnny Carver, The Hagers, Roni Stoneman, Narvel Felts and Jeanie Seely
