AMERICANA MUSIC ASSOCIATION PARTNERS WITH NARM
FOR 2004 AMERICANA CD SAMPLER
Americana Music Month, Consumer Database Created to Help Raise Awareness
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Americana Music Association has announced a partnership with NARM (National Association of Recording Merchandisers) to produce an Americana Music CD Sampler. The sampler will be released to consumers on August 3, 2004 at a low retail price point, with the purpose of increasing awareness and sales of Americana music. The project will be co-promoted by the AMA and NARM, and has been modeled after other successful genre-specific samplers that have been previously launched in conjunction with NARM. Ryko Distribution will oversee distribution for the project.
The Americana CD sampler will contain new and previously unreleased music from both established and emerging artists within the Americana genre. This release represents the Americana Music Association’s first major initiative specifically geared towards increasing the profile of Americana at the consumer level. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to launch an industry-wide effort that will help both the sale of Americana CDs and also further brand Americana music to the consumer,” says JD May, Executive Director of the Americana Music Association. “We’ll be working closely with retailers and participating labels on this project to ensure its success, while also helping to facilitate an increased profile for Americana music at retail.” The Americana CD sampler will come with a suggested list price of $1.98, and retailers will be asked to place the sampler in high-traffic areas, such as counter displays, endcaps and listening posts.
“Americana is the crossroads where lyric, melody, rhythm and emotion converge to chronicle life's experiences. Ryko Distribution is proud of it's longstanding association with the Americana community and culture, and even more so in assisting these musical storytellers in getting their word out,” says Jim Cuomo, President of Ryko Distribution
The Americana cd sampler will be supported by a number of initiatives that were developed at the Americana retail summit during the AMA’s annual conference in September 2003. During the summit, nearly 30 retailers, labels and distributors gathered to formulate a plan for helping grow sales and awareness of Americana music, and all continue to work together to bring the ideas to fruition. The three main initiatives developed at the summit included the CD sampler, the designation of Americana Music Month for September of 2004, and the development of an Americana consumer database compiled from bounceback cards in the CD sampler. In addition, a consumer-oriented web site will be created to provide additional information on Americana music and artists, while also helping to gather additional demographic information from interested consumers.
Labels will have the opportunity to submit tracks for consideration beginning February 17 through April 20. A five-person panel comprised of retailers and journalists will be charged with reviewing the submissions and selecting the final tracks, based on criteria given to them by the Americana Music Association. The AMA will donate proceeds from the project to help support the NARM scholarship fund. Submission forms are available online at www.americanamusic.org www.americanamusic.org/
