Tom Russell - Indians Cowboys Horses Dogs
Release Date Feb 24 2004 Label - Hightone
This is Tom Russell's third album of cowboy/western material. Tom grew up around Southern California horserace tracks and his family's ranch in the Los Angeles suburbs -- and musically, listening to Tex Ritter, Marty Robbins, and other singers of western material. He's written a number of songs that have become standards of the cowboy poetry/western genre, both on his own, and with Ian Tyson, including "Claude Dallas," "Navajo Rug," "The Rose of the San Joaquin," and "The Sky Above, The Mud Below." This CD covers a range of western and cowboy related material, both traditional and contemporary. There are several new Russell originals including "Bucking Horse Moon," written together with noted cowboy poet Paul Zarzyski, "Tonight We Ride," and the children's song, "Little Blue Horse." There are Russell interpretations of songs by Bob Dylan (the rarity "Seven Curses"), Woody Guthrie, Steve Gillette and Linda Thompson. Tom also takes on Johnny Cash's "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" and Marty Robbins' "El Paso" featuring Tex-Mex accordion legend Joel Guzman. Other guest musicians featured on INDIANS COWBOYS HORSES DOGS include Andrew Hardin, Joel Guzman, Eliza Gilkyson, and Elana Fremerman from the Hot Club of Cowtown.
