While sitting here making a CD out of Bobby Austin's great Apartment #9 album, I was just in awe of Ralph Mooney. His solos on that song are just stunning. It's right up there with "I threw away the rose", the live version of "the last letter" by Waylon, "You took her off my hands" by Wynn Stewart, and several others as my favorite Mooney performances. I just saw that he's guesting on Dale's new CD. What could be better!!!

Yeah, I'm sucker for any album with good steel playing on it, too - and Ralph Mooney is definitely one of the best - ever heard his album with James Burton? Now, thats the album to look for!! Btw I picked up another killer steel album by Lloyd Green from his Little Darlin' era, on my way from work a coupla days ago and for next to nothing - highly recommendable stuff there, mostly uptempo instrumental covers of country hits of the day ('66 that is), spiced up w/ his wacky trademark licks & tones - actually I doubt Johnny Paychek's "Lovin' Machine" was ever a hit, but at least it should have been, as we know it ..

The only thing better than listening to a Ralph Mooney album is seeing Ralph Mooney play live. Last year at the Texas Steel Guitar Jamboree in Dallas I had the great pleasure of seeing Ralph play. The next morning I had breakfast with Ralph and we talked not only about steel guitar but all kinds of topics. On top of being a fantastic steel guitarist, what a super nice guy and a fine gentleman Ralph Mooney is.

We saw Waylon back in the mid eighties, and between shows I got to talking with Mr. Mooney. He ended up giving us back stage passes, and my wife and I were able to meet Waylon and Jessie. I got Waylon and Ralph's autographs, and I will always remember how gracious Ralph was that night. Listening to the expanded version of Waylon - Live! Ralph was all over that record. My all-time favorite steel player, hands down.

mooney rules! one of the things i like best about waylon's live expanded version cd is that he turned him loose on that smokin' steel every chance he got. after listening to that short audio clip of "fox on the run" from dale's "dreamland" cd i can't wait to hear the rest of the song. just that short snippet of the steel solo stood the hairs on the back of my neck straight up!

Well not to taunt you or anything but I left out a heck of a lot of steel intro on that clip so I could get Dale's vocals on --- you're gonna LOVE it!!

I will agree with John that Moony can be very accessable. He also features young guests on stage. I ended up at the other end of the hall from his suite at Dallas so one night I looked in on the jam session.

Ralph still has his chops! (I thought he had retired). Check out the new Dale. Ralph's all over it. Best playing ever on a Dale record, IMO.

I stand corrected. After reading the liner notes, Mooney's only on two cuts. The other guy imitates him quite a bit on the other tracks. Nonetheless, excellent playing on this CD.

don't feel bad, until i read the liner notes i thought the steel on "fox on the run" had to be mooney, but i have to say don pawluk did some of the most tasteful work i've heard in years on that one! i went to see dale right after don was hired and i noticed that he was heavily influenced by mooney. anyway, i got "dreamland" and ed burleson's "cold hard truth" in the mail monday and they're definitely the two best cd's i've heard this year, as my volume knob has gone into territory that it hasn't ventured into for a while ;D

I'll second the notion on the Ed Burleson disk. As for Moony if I need a fix I go to Waylon live.

Don did an awesome job on steel on Dale's album - he'd probably consider it a pretty big compliment to have his playin' tagged as being Ralph's So now that some of you have had a chance to hear the album too - what's your favorite track?? I always get hooked up on Fox on the Run! Don't forget that if you don't have the album yet you can try and win a copy from TCB -- the information about entry is on the main page www.takecountryback.com/main.htm and ends May 15th!
