Charles Bailey, 'Opry' performer, dies KNOXVILLE — Charles L. Bailey, who with his brother Dan performed on WSM radio's Grand Ole Opry, has died. He was 88. Relatives said he died Friday in Bear, Del. A native of Hawkins County, Bailey and his brother formed The Bailey Brothers and began their singing career in the 1930s on East Tennessee radio, including WNOX in Knoxville. Tennessee Ernie Ford started his singing career with the Baileys in 1941. After World War II, The Bailey Brothers performed on WSM radio's Martha White Show and The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. The Bailey Brothers were among musicians chosen to represent Tennessee at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington during the 1976 bicentennial celebrations. Besides his brother Dan, Charles Bailey is survived by another brother, Earl Bailey; his daughters Charlona Smith-Bryan of Nashville and Carol Burns and Danna Thomas of Bear; and his son, Charles L.
